About the Department of OPHTHALMOLOGY

In October 1975, when the then Faculty of Health Sciences was organized into Divisions, Surgery (including Ophthalmology) was in the Division of Hospital Care, with Dr. (Mrs) Bukola Kogbe as the first Ophthalmologist. However, in March 1976, the Department of Surgery was created to include Ophthalmology as a composite Unit. In December 2015, the University Senate approved the creation of the Department of Ophthalmology, but it was not until the 1 st of August, 2016, that the Department was formally inaugurated in line with international establishments for teaching and research into eye disorders, with Prof. Adenike Odunmorayo Adeoye as the foundation Head of Department. Since its inception, the Department has been evolving, with increased manpower and capacity development. The University Council approved the commencement of postgraduate programmes MSc and PhD) for the department in December 2022, and the first set of candidates for the Master of Science in Ophthalmology and Doctor of Philosophy in Ophthalmology were admitted for the 2022/2023 Academic session. The award of the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria prize is given to the best graduating student in Clinical Ophthalmology who must have passed the Final year MB;ChB examinations and must not have repeated any year. As of February 2026, the academic staff strength (full-time) stood at five and the non-academic staff at one.
